Choose the display around the games, performance range, desk and connection—not a single refresh-rate number.

List the games you play and the performance your PC or console can sustain. Competitive games may justify a lower resolution and higher refresh target, while visually demanding single-player games may benefit more from resolution, contrast and HDR. The useful monitor is the one your system can drive in the modes you will actually use.
A larger screen can improve immersion, but it also fills more of the field of view and makes lower pixel density easier to see at a close desk. Measure the available depth, include the stand footprint or monitor arm, and verify that the entire image can be viewed without repeated head movement.
A higher refresh rate shortens the interval between updates, but the panel must also transition cleanly. Look for measured response behavior, overshoot and input delay across several refresh rates. Verify the selected refresh rate in Windows after installation; a capable monitor can still run at a lower default setting.
Variable refresh synchronizes display timing with the GPU output to reduce tearing and uneven presentation within the supported range. VESA's Adaptive-Sync Display certification uses a published compliance test specification. Certification is not mandatory for a good monitor, but it gives buyers a standardized reference beyond a generic compatibility claim.
An HDR input signal does not guarantee strong HDR presentation. Examine peak brightness, black level, local dimming behavior and color capability. VESA DisplayHDR is an open certification program with defined tiers; use it as one data point rather than treating every HDR label as equivalent.
Check whether the graphics card or console, cable and monitor input support the required resolution, refresh rate, variable refresh, bit depth and HDR mode together. Some displays expose different capabilities over HDMI and DisplayPort, and some high-bandwidth modes rely on compression or reduced chroma.
Set the monitor's intended mode, enable the correct refresh rate and variable-refresh option, and then evaluate color and HDR. Windows 11 provides an HDR Calibration app for compatible displays. Save a known-good configuration before experimenting with aggressive overdrive or image-processing modes.
